    Teaching database engineers involves a variety of learning activities. A strong focus is on practical problems that go beyond the acquisition of knowledge. Skills and experience are equally important. We propose a virtual apprenticeship model for the knowledge- and skillsoriented Web-based education of database students. We adapt the classical cognitive apprenticeship theory to the Web context utilising scaffolding and activity theory. The choice of educational media and the forms of student interaction with the media are central success criteria

    Continuum Contributions to the SDO/AIA Passbands During Solar Flares

    Data from the Multiple EUV Grating Spectrograph (MEGS-A) component of the Extreme Ultraviolet Experiment (EVE) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) were used to quantify the contribution of continuum emission to each of the EUV channels of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), also on SDO, during an X-class solar flare that occurred on 2011 February 15. Both the pre-flare subtracted EVE spectra and fits to the associated free-free continuum were convolved with the AIA response functions of the seven EUV passbands at 10 s cadence throughout the course of the flare. It was found that 10-25% of the total emission in the 94A, 131A, 193A, and 335A passbands throughout the main phase of the flare was due to free-free emission. Reliable measurements could not be made for the 171A channel, while the continuum contribution to the 304A channel was negligible due to the presence of the strong He II emission line. Up to 50% of the emission in the 211A channel was found to be due to free-free emission around the peak of the flare, while an additional 20% was due to the recombination continuum of He II. The analysis was extended to a number of M- and X-class flares and it was found that the level of free-free emission contributing to the 171A and 211A passbands increased with increasing GOES class. These results suggest that the amount of continuum emission that contributes to AIA observations during flares is more significant than that stated in previous studies which used synthetic, rather than observed, spectra. These findings highlight the importance of spectroscopic observations carried out in conjunction with those from imaging instruments so that the data are interpreted correctly.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

    Quality assurance for digital learning object repositories: issues for the metadata creation process

    Metadata enables users to find the resources they require, therefore it is an important component of any digital learning object repository. Much work has already been done within the learning technology community to assure metadata quality, focused on the development of metadata standards, specifications and vocabularies and their implementation within repositories. The metadata creation process has thus far been largely overlooked. There has been an assumption that metadata creation will be straightforward and that where machines cannot generate metadata effectively, authors of learning materials will be the most appropriate metadata creators. However, repositories are reporting difficulties in obtaining good quality metadata from their contributors, and it is becoming apparent that the issue of metadata creation warrants attention. This paper surveys the growing body of evidence, including three UK-based case studies, scopes the issues surrounding human-generated metadata creation and identifies questions for further investigation. Collaborative creation of metadata by resource authors and metadata specialists, and the design of tools and processes, are emerging as key areas for deeper research. Research is also needed into how end users will search learning object repositories

The purpose of this review will be to look at the existing empirical research in order to discover whether there is a causal relationship between playing violent video games and aggression. The conclusions will help parents and educators make decisions about what games they allow their children and students to play

    HAZEducation: Reframing Hazing Education by Centering Connections

    Hazing is a particularly aggressive initiation ritual that has been around for centuries yet still exists today causing psychological and physical harm to students in higher education across the United States. This critical action research thesis will explore my philosophical framework, the history of hazing, as well as how it occurs within primarily male organizations in higher education today. Student affairs educators should be working with these students collectively in order to help facilitate other ways of belonging. This has informed my programmatic intervention, HAZEducation. This intervention is designed to empower male students through skill-building to educate them about hazing, to help them confront and question their own hazing activities, as well as to aid them in developing less risky ways to form a sense of belonging. While this program is targeted for members of primarily male organizations, I would recommend this be expanded in the future to include all student organizations, since hazing can occur in any type of organization or group
